There are numerous other applications involving gesture-based computing listed in the Horizon Report. One of the listed technologies is LG TV support for voice and gesture control (Wilcox 2012). As part of this integration effort, LG is adding native support for GoogleTV to some television models this year. The LG user interface is integrating Magic Motion into the remote controls for the TV platform. As the gesture-based computing and voice interfaces mature it will create a new market for advanced applications available for use on television sets and mobile devices.
Ultimately this trend is worth watching as I believe over the next 15 to 20 years the human computer interaction will be much more than gesture or voice control. I believe we will be part of the web and the interface will be controlled within ourselves I plan to explore this idea more over the next few months as part of a futuring intitiative.

ReplyDeleteI agree gesture based computing is becoming more and more needed due to inventions like the kinex and influences that have come out of the Minority report movie. I do believe however that as Dr. C stated at the symposiumm "preforming gestured based computing practices for 8 hours a day can be extremely exhausting for the body." On another note, with the the technology that is provided today, is it still applicable that you need 8 hours of computing practices to perform the same tasks as before. Often the technology that is provided today is intended to simplify that tasks of the past. With inventions like "siri" you can now talk to devices and never have to lift a finger.
It should be interesting to see how this technology adopts to humans (and visa-versa). "Natural" doesn't necessarily mean that everybody performs a task in the same way. Some people are right-handed, while others are left-handed - for example. There are many examples where there are enough differences in how people perceive and perform tasks that gesture-based computing will find it's challenges. In my opinion, people have to adjust, or be trained, in order for current technology to "recognize" our gestures. Still, it's an intriguing idea, and one that I think will become more natural and intuitive over time as technology progresses.
